New BIS method for VOC measurement

BIS standard method, IS 5182-27 (Nov, 2024), a recently introduced standard method for monitoring of hazardous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in ambient, indoor, and workplace air ranging from Vinyl Chloride to C22 hydrocarbons.

I am delighted to share my contribution to the development of the BIS standard method, IS 5182-27 notified & published in Nov 2024, a recently introduced standard method for monitoring hazardous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in ambient, indoor, and workplace air employing innovative approach, using diffusive sampling and thermal desorption–chromatography–mass spectrometry (TD–GC–MS) and how it represents a significant milestone in air quality monitoring in India, an urgent need to address rising air pollution. The new method moves away from traditional solvent extraction methods (as outlined in IS 5182-Part 11) in favour of TD–GC–MS. This transition enables more comprehensive detection of hazardous compounds in the air ranging from Vinyl Chloride ( chloroethene, chloroethylene, or ethylene monochloride) to C22 hydrocarbons.

IS 5182-Part 27 (2024) for VOC passive sampling has many advantages over previous methods which include:
– Broader analyte range – extensive range of VOCs not measurable with the old method
– Sensitivity – up to 1,000 times greater sensitivity than solvent extraction methods
– Solvent-free – eliminating use harmful solvents affording environmental and H&S benefits
– Simplified sampling – passive samplers are easy to use
– Cost saving – solvent-free, cryogen-free and pump-free
